CFRP Composite Drilling Study
Project type
Research
Date
August 2024
Location
San Diego, CA
This project encompasses a comprehensive analysis of the drilling process for CFRP composites, evaluating various drilling tools and settings to determine the most effective parameters for achieving optimal hole geometry while minimizing delamination, fraying, and dust contamination. The experimental setup included a 3990 HiTorque Mini Mill, a customized airflow chamber, and microscopic imaging for cross-sectional analysis of drilled holes. After testing six different combinations of drilling tools, the combination of the AMAMCO Drill Reamer chased by an End Mill
produced the most uniform hole geometry. In general, the end mill was found to be the least aggressive drilling tool, as well as the one with the flattest geometry. All samples were drilled in accordance with NAVAIR standards, including specifications for spindle speed, pecking rate, and hole depth.
Below are some of the results obtained after drilling, sectioning, capturing the cross-section views of the holes made with each drilling tool.
